Singer songwriter mandolinist Karen Mal has a new CD - songs of the 30s and 40s, standards in jazz. Karen is a perfect voice for them.
Just the way the writers envisioned their songs being presented - I think.
The way June Christy would do.
And the band - Will Taylor; guitar, violin and viola. And too, there's an upright bass, trumpet, clarinet and cello. Interesting instrumentation - I think.
Reminiscent.
It's about corner Rexalls, soda fountains, jukeboxes, big band ballrooms, Roselands and Steinways. Look up walkups window fronts violins and dance pavilions - Tin Pan Alley.
The trumpet evokes Harry James and Helen Forrest; the violin, Will Taylor and Karen Mal.
Lantern is a CD for those of us who have a love for classic standards, jazz standards, songbooks, road shows and otherwise. Highly recommended.
Among the favorites on Lantern Shine is that jazz anthem, I Cover the Waterfront. Of course.
Some of the others: Stars Fell on Alabama, The Very Thought of You, Dream a Little Dream, Pennies from Heaven - you get the gist. Thirteen in all.
