marvelous marvin hagler vignette #1...

A night in 1978, Boston Garden, November 11, middleweight Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Willie Warren, a journeyman pugilist out of Texas - Hagler wins easily, TKO 7.  At ringside, Peter Bonventre of Newsweek magazine turns to me, "Marvelous Marvin - he's a beautiful fighter."  Bonventre's visit to Boston resulted in a full page story on Hagler in Newsweek's first issue of 1979 - Superman Christopher Reeve on the cover.  Hagler went on to challenge Vito Antuofermo for the middleweight championship of the world November 30, 1979 - Marvelous Marvin came away with a draw!  Controversial decision!  Vito retains the title!  Wow!  Everyone grimaced!  Then Hagler challenged and won the world middleweight boxing title from Alan Minter in London, England, September 27, 1980 - TKO 3!  Wow!  Everyone joyed!  Marvelous held the undisputed world middleweight title for seven and a half years and thirteen title defenses!  Then another controversial decision!  A 12 round split-decision loss on April 6, 1987 in Las Vegas, Nevada!  Hagler and everyone I know were stunned!  Wow!  Everyone grimaced again!  Hagler retired in June 1988 never to return to the ring.  Marvelous Marvin - he was a beautiful fighter.
