for Jean...
This quiet morning
The furnace is on
The coffee is done
I look at those things I have rhymed
Especially you
All this long wonderful while
Sounds like a song?
It is
The furnace is on
The coffee is done
I look at those things I have rhymed
Especially you
All this long wonderful while
Sounds like a song?

the last haiku of 2013...
Inverness is far
in whispers branches and boats,
a staggering march.
In miles to go too.
in whispers branches and boats,
a staggering march.
In miles to go too.

sap green cape blue sea...
The thin snow last night
Now
The light from the headlights on the street
Cold streets
But
Christmastime
And
Charles Mingus's Flowers For A Lady
On the cold streets
In the thin snow
Point poignant
Bass and drums piano
And
Tenor
Saxophone and
Altos
Point counterpoint poignant
Jazz!
Burnt!
Sienna!
Sap green Cape blue sea
Orange pop paper lantern bright
Lots of jazz!
All The Things You Are
Pretty good jazz
Pretty good jazz, Jack!

with verve...
Strings
Of light fall from a window painting
Over
The Venetian blinds
In
Front
Of
A Christmas morning still dark
Quiet
And
Full
Sing a song
With verve
Of light fall from a window painting
Over
The Venetian blinds
In
Front
Of
A Christmas morning still dark
Quiet
And
Full
Sing a song

cranberry glass and a boat going by...
Lights reflecting in the coral trees
The ship's clock melting snow
And leaf
Gone from the street and branches
Bare
Still
Quiet
Gray
Light and coffee writing now
After a silence

quiet now...
I just heard that train whistle
I hadn't heard for a while
The 5:40
Quiet now
Before the day rain snow
Quiet
A sound at crossings
A horn
Fading
Distant circles stars and moons
Morning that looks like night
In Scotland

Quiet now
Before the day rain snow

daylight black...
Cold snow on the red maple branches
Cold moon
Daylight black
And a crow on the movie house roof
And a crow on the spoon factory roof
Cold crow
Cold roof
Cold moon
Daylight black
And
Christmas stockings hanging by the fire

that blue on the window and bop...
That blue on the window
A moon
A world
A song
For the day
And the sunrise in the pine
On the maple oak and elm
A sunset
A world
A moon
Jack Kerouac is in town
There's a linen bop at the club
Jacket and tie the color of wheat
And reading in the park
Streetlights and Café Neon
Hotel Neon too
And the movie house bulbs are blinking
Here in the city
Be,
Bop!

The long water
Sails

Deserted shores stony paths
Sparse grasses sun though
Rising and setting in the rest of the world
Colors and words walk to far places
The long water
Ends one day

"I knew that if I did not... "
"As I walked out the door toward my freedom, I knew that if I did not leave all the anger, hatred and bitterness behind that I would still be in prison." -Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)

brigitte zarie's new cd l'amour... whoa! wow! outstanding! and elegant!...
To paraphrase Peter Bonventre of Newsweek magazine on his leaving the Boston Garden and a Hagler fight in 1978, "Marvelous Marvin is a beautiful fighter!" - well, "Brigitte Zarie is a beautiful singer." Oh, that bass! And Randy Brecker featured on 2 tunes. Oh, that horn! First class production. Big orchestra sound. Nice instrumentation. Now, Brigitte, it's Good to Be Home listening to this on Quiet Nights with Nobody Else - 12 tunes impeccably swinging - crisp and beat. My favorite female vocalist Anita O'Day. Brigitte is a new favorite - not with the edge of a Miss O'Day, but as full voiced, vibrant and lyrical. And sincere. I see myself at Charlie's Gone By listening to both. Whoa! Wow! Outstanding! And elegant! Brigitte is an extraordinary songwriter too - except for Walk the Line and Quiet Nights (Corcovado), she wrote all of the songs on L'amour - music by Brigitte Zarie and Neil Jason; lyrics by Brigitte Zarie. I'm hearing standards all over the place. To paraphrase Bonventre again, "Brigitte is a beautiful songwriter." L'amour highly highly recommended. It is a story. And it is jazz. L'amour is available at iTunes, Amazon, and Brigitte's website http://brigittezarie.com/ -Peter DeVeber

imagery...
Under a Lester Lanin sky
Lights and beer, jacket and tie
Seersucker
And
Madras
Boats and Polka Dots
Charts and cats, cobblestones
And
Winks
Leafy rooms, tents
And
Anything Goes
Cole Porter plays
Dancing
In Oyster Bay
It is not November
But
More
A
Summer
In January

after the storm...
Eyeglasses
And a pad of yellow lined paper
And a pen black ink medium point,
Making
This morning bright with the sun
And last night bright with the stars
After the storm

like highways reaching on the road...
This room is quiet
Though a whir of cars on the street
A very still blue glass disc hooked on the window
Moon and Earth
Branches bare on the red maple
Like highways reaching on the road
Jimmy Giuffre Anita O'Day
And
Newport
And
1958
These random Days & Nights
In the quiet room
Lady Day
Lady Day
At Storyville Boston One Night Only!
And
Say
Lady Gaga
In an orange colored sky
Oh my
Oh my

it is that kind of morning...
The sun plays gold on the bushes and the trees
This morning
That cool slight breeze too
And takes into her arms
A wreath
A bent apple tree
Arches
And
Columns
And
Spindles
It is that kind of morning
This morning
That cool slight breeze too
And takes into her arms
A wreath

John F. Kennedy...
"The life of the arts, far from being an interruption, a distraction in the life of the nation, is very close to the center of the nation's purpose - and it is the test of the quality of a nation's civilization." -John F. Kennedy

in-between...
Quick study
In-between
The stars and the moon
The sun and the day
The bridge and barn cottages, mostly blue
Sets at Storyville
And
February
And
April
*inspired by Shanna outside early to empty yesterday's bucket of cold clay water.

on a bay breeze...
I need a poem this morning
A fifteen minute poem
Not about blue painter's tape
Waving
On a bay breeze
But about a twig and berry wreath
Now just appeared
On
The
Movie
House
Porch
A jazz star bringing the wind
And
The sun
Home
And
A lone finch on the feeder with them

a perfect picture...
Lights on in the houses across the bay
Streaks in the white and gray
Far off
A car goes up the street
Everything still
One bird feeder dancing
The rosas and the pines and the blue painter's tape
All still
Except for that car
And a seagull lands on Kathryn's chimney
A perfect picture
A perfect pose
Streaks in the white and gray
Far off
A car goes up the street
Everything still
One bird feeder dancing
The rosas and the pines and the blue painter's tape
All still
Except for that car
And a seagull lands on Kathryn's chimney

little pieces...
I hear the winds in Sadie Town
As far as Kansas
Planes of rain
Baltimore
New York
Philadelphia and Lowell
The writers ride through the South
Into
Mexico
Ocean-going warnings the
Bells and horns
It is a big storm on the land
'And the angels sing'
Little pieces

There is a November glass on the picture
In an old frame
Filigree
Tea gardens and chocolate
Leis of jazz, ribbons and books
Paper and orange and gold
Lanterns

esque the poem...
There are blue clouds
And
And an eagle above the movie house
And
News: Don Cheadle to be Miles in the biopic
However,
I am not a playwright
Or
A wheelwright
Or
A cartwright
But
I am a screenwriter
And
I am a poet

in a morning not as cold?...
The feeders sway
Just
Lightly
In a morning not as cold
And the blue painter's tape is still
In the sun
The beach plums too
The beach too
And a bird came by
And the wind came up
In a morning not as cold?
Oh well
Just
Lightly
In a morning not as cold
And the blue painter's tape is still
In the sun
The beach plums too
The beach too
And a bird came by
And the wind came up
In a morning not as cold?

Geese in a picture
Out a window on the dawn
Flying
On a wall
A blue horizon
There
Red brick chimneys
There
On the bay
In the plums
And
Geese
On the dawn
Perfectly
Out a window on the dawn
Flying
On a wall
A blue horizon
There
Red brick chimneys
There
On the bay
In the plums

off the bay tiny caps...
Off the bay tiny caps
A dance in the plum bushes
And on the high paths
Monk played a note somewhere in between
A letter in a bottle
On a sail from Scotland
Warm in the sea
While Andean peaks melt
A gull caught in a running wind
Went by
