matisse's daughter a ballerina...
Matisse's daughter Marguerite a ballerina
The orchestra & the singers
On the museum wall in paper & paint
Toe shoes pink & satin
Long flowing skirts
Blanched almond
Her chestnut hair pulled back
Save
Just
A
Curl
I walk into the theater
Arches & seas & lands & Muses
I walk into the arena
& there I sit & there I see
Great boats great armies
Orange curls
Orange songs
The Gates
Doors & windows
&
A golden harp under a peach star
Ah! The Ballet Matisse
Ah!
A curl
A cry a smile a dream

for eddie...
The big sea is an orchestra
A band
A Glen Island night
Kenton & Christy
& Anita O'Day
The music
Home
Train tracks to winter
Something quiet for Eddie
*Edward Owen died Tuesday afternoon, February 19, 2008. He was 86. He was my friend. Before retirement, Eddie enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a popular radio broadcaster in the State of Maine.

poetry songs...
A train whistles far far
The smell of
4 scoops of coffee
The taste of peach jelly
Last night
The cold night
At the cold pond
A row of willows
Moon river & the Matisse jazz band
Singing poetry songs
Where?
In the tangled trees the musical stars
The smell of
4 scoops of coffee
The taste of peach jelly
Last night
The cold night
At the cold pond
A row of willows
Moon river & the Matisse jazz band
Singing poetry songs

the gentle side...
The gentle side
Whispers
Trilling waves in the bay
Quiet songs quiet moon
The mermaid's hair Brandywine
The mermaid's name
Moon River
Oh!
John Coltrane
The gentle side
The Artist went to the breakwater in the moonlight
Where Moon River splashed & shivered a bit
& The Artist began to paint
In the lamplight & the moonlight
In snow colors
In flower in blue
Orange & pink
"Paint Moon River in the stars like a Matisse,"
The Artist heard the saxophone ringing.
Alabama
After The Rain
Oh!
John Coltrane
The gentle side
Drummer, tap him in
Piano player plink plink
"Paint Moon River in the stars like a Matisse!"
& The Artist did.

the room blue...
A little book of prayer
Poems
& paintings
Sketches & scribbles
Its orange cover tattered
Its pages torn & taped
Thumb through
Thumb through
Down from the pyramid
The walk blue
The path through the field
Blue
Quiet night
Quiet
The
Muse
Floating
In silk
The ocean's flowers embroidered in gold in her hair

van gogh's the night cafe...
The Night Cafe
It's quarter after midnight.
There!
He destroyed himself!
& over there!
He went mad!
There! There!
She committed a crime!
"I wonder what the crime was." Debouis asked
"I don't know I imagine it was quite sordid," came the answer
Red red walls
Mirrors with tall oval tops
Green & turquoise tabletops
Long & small squares
Pedestals & buffets
Flowers
Bottles
Glasses
Elbows at rest
&
In the center of a circle of back-to chairs
The billiards table shadowing
The yellow chipped floor
& the criminal's hat is decorated with Ragusa berries
Orange & shiny
& around the room heads down on the tables
Bakers knitters & poets
A great saxophone player would have played the Night Cafe
& he would have sat with Van Gogh
Drank
Scrimmaged
& smoked
& painted pretty songs
In the shadow
Of
The billiards table
It's quarter after midnight.

this the february breeze,...
This the February breeze,
Lifting
A sparrow above the mountain ash
Above the bay
This the February breeze,
April's song
The gray ocean dawn
Breaking on McGonigal Hill
Lighting
The kitchen window sill
Madam Lafarge & the gardener angel
There
A miniature vase cobalt blue & plum red
Cloth flowers purple & lily gold
O do I hear Oscar & Benny?
Ray Brown! Ray Brown!
&
A
Wish
Upon
This?

5 songs...
Riding
5 songs & fast horses fast to the stars
Flying
By comets
Stepping on the ice gulls & geese & winter robins
- - gingerly
Runyonesque Athena Parthenos & Monterey jazz
&
Oh!
A gentle John Coltrane song
&
Oh!
Superman's New York
Down there!
That's the news!
Get here
From there
A plinkin' violin
Under
The proscenium arch
Arching from Orion to Cassiopeia
Her winter love
At
The
Edge
Of the arcade
&
Oh!
The magnolias out there
Therein the Great Flowers
5 songs & fast horses
& old morning photographs stacked
Willows mulberries & great & broken pines
Old
Morning
Photographs
Stacked!
Fireworks!
The autumn trees!
Satellites islands & melting snows
A winter minute
At
The
Star
Well
Out on the black on a Navajo blanket
The shaman's smoke a rest & a rattling
Across
On strings trains busses & fast horses
Through
Curtains of red & orange
Bell & song
Markers to Pluto & beyond the Evening Star
The rose galaxy the orchids & lilacs galaxy
& spindly trees leafless just tiny tiny berries
Some blue
Dressing the brittle branches
In light
Christmas light
