the big poem...
The moon
In the cathedral glass
The jazz killers
The lady
The lady
Holiday
Lady Day
&
Anitah! Anitah!
O'Day
Mingus
Monk
&
Clapton
"yes you look wonderful tonight"
Getz
Chet
&
Joel
"sing us a song you're the piano man sing us a song tonight"
Smoked glasses
Hunched
At the cathedral glass
The windows
Inside the windows
Outside the trees leafless
In a winter tint
Balloons
Red
Chartreuse
Silver
Orange blue & yellow
The
Notes
Of
The song
Anchored
In a pond of purple moons
In the winter breath
"seaside by the beautiful sea"
The sound
The church music
Great through the Vespers hall
On the harbor
On
The
Moonlit wall
Amen
The hopes the wants the needs
The swaying fields
& coral flowers
Of the poets
Of
Joyfully
The
Flat Gauguin canvas
Amen
Ah!
The flights of the Muse
A gauzy wing
See through the angel hair
A curl of a hush
Her
Beautiful
Face
Oh!
Angel Muse
The imperative peace
Of
Brush & pen
Oh!
Angel Muse
Lift the fog
& fan the good heart of the moon
Struggling at her mooring
Speaking to
The bright black night
Wishing for
The color of winter's whisper & evergreen
&
A luncheon on the grass
Of jams & cakes & orange cream sodas
In the cathedral glass
The jazz killers
The lady

milo hewes ca. 1956...
In the field of jazz he was young,
But "Down Beat" billed him as news,
For he produced a progressive style,
Along with a swingin' Blues.
From Storyville to Basin Street,
From Basin Street to Condon's
The cry of all musicians
Was Jazz, Jazz, Jazz*
To Condon's he was invited,
With Basie he played his horn,
The kind of music they put forth,
Kept them going till early morn.
With the very best in Jazz,
All night he did play.
With Ellington, Armstrong, and Krupa,
The stand began to sway.
In the reviews the next day he was great,
So said the critics of Blues.
They named him Jazzman of the Year
And predicted Newport for Milo Hewes,
With Mulligan and Davis
To Newport he did fly.
The music was hot,
The weather was warm that evening in July.
The stage lights were on at Freebody Park,
Mr. Kenton was host.
As Miles looked off into space,
Cigarettes were shining like ghosts.
Hewes was next.
With poise he did step forward.
Little did he know
That his time was borrowed.
Suddenly pain showed on his face,
His fans gasped in fear.
There on the stand
Died Milo Hewes, Jazzman of the Year
*(chorus optional after each stanza).

A lily in her hair
A lyric on her smile
I need not worry about the storm
I am learning to sail...

Sssssssssssssss...
Fire and water!
And then we thought
And then we saw
And then we heard
Wistfully
Then
Then
A seagull peeked over the el
And sang
A pretty girl
Is...
The princess in town
To follow
Bow & arrow
Gifting
Of onion breads
And jazz!
Oh! Jazz!

capt. greg sparrow...
Hi notes
Hi hats
- Ride
The winds & the waves
The transit
- Of the sea
The transom
- Of the horn
Hidden
The secret treasure
There hidden
A million notes
And the keys
Mother of Pearl C, G, A
Not a secret now
- Dug up
By
The Captain
The Superman
The Sweetman
The sails trimmed - stays
The quartet
Beboppers & pirates
Arrrrrrgh!
Chevrons & jolly rogers
Flyin' home
Ridin' high
- The winds & the waves

a jazz waltz...
A jazz waltz
In backyards
In hammocks
In washtubs
Puffs of air on a canvas sky
Whales breach
Boats beat
Gulls dive

Swinging man
Jazz man Magic Jack

Scattered poems let them fly let them fly
Firestacks curl seaboats heel
Roads oceans
Voyages into Piano Jazz
Attack piano

The Fabulous Rafaels & Yaskos
Did Caruso really live in a tree
?
The Tenor of Thomaston
Name carved on a wall an underwall
In the old opry house
Pianos & Tenors
Scattered poems on the fly on the fly

Lulee sang,
'Coffee morning
The window curtain
Gauzy blue

5 after storm haiku...
Sea light
wind light -
Morning on the bay
Gulls yaw -
- - defiantly
On Kathryn's roof
crows plume -
The wind is dying
Bare branches
quaver -
The beach plums play
Petunias
blossom -
On the yellow sun
wind light -
Morning on the bay
Gulls yaw -
- - defiantly
On Kathryn's roof
crows plume -
The wind is dying
Bare branches

Petunias
blossom -
